Les comtes de Gorizia (Görz en allemand) descendent des comtes palatins de Bavière. Tout d’abord baillis des patriarches d’Aquilée, ceux-ci deviennent progressivement indépendants. En 1365, Mainardo (Meinhard) reçut le titre de « Prince du Saint-Empire », ce qui lui donnait le droit de vote à la Diète impériale. Partie intégrante du Saint-Empire, Gorizia ne devint une ville italienne qu’en 1919, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale.
