Notes
There was a tradition established in the 19th century that when the Ottoman Sultan travelled outside Constantinople (Qustantaniyya) he would issue coins to commemorate the event.  As the only mint operating in the Empire at this time was the one located in the capital, these coins were manufactured in the grounds of Topkapi Palace.  In 1909/1327 regnal year 1 the Sultan Mehmed V Reshad went to Bursa to pray at the tombs of his ancestors, who had been laid to rest in the first capital of the Empire.  In 1910 he made the journey to Edirne (Adrianople).  On this occasion 500, 100 and 50 Kurush coins were struck in gold to commemorate his visit.  In 1911, the third regnal year of his reign, Sultan Reshad toured the three European provinces remaining under his rule just before the outbreak of the First Balkan War.  He travelled first to Selanik (Salonika), then to Manastir (Bitola in today's Macedonia) and finally to Kosova (Pristina), where he visited the site of the Battle that won Serbia for the Ottomans.  While these coins were manufactured in the imperial mint they claimed to have been struck in the cities that bore their names - a convenient fiction.  It is likely that they were such a powerful public relations tool that they raised hostile comments in Greece and Serbia and contributed to the end of the major presence of Turkey in Europe. This is the first time in History that all these 15 very rare coins are being offered as a complete set.
