Notes
In her article "A New Mint in Ifriqiya" (in "3rd Simone Assemani Symposium on Islamic Coins", pp. 106-113), Jasmina Znidarec reveals the existence of a hitherto unknown mint, Madinat Nabl, in what is now Nabeul in north-eastern Tunisia. This coastal city was the closest one to Sicily, which was then under Fatimid rule. The creation of a mint in the region is explained by this proximity, as well as by the economic importance of the region, which was then famed for farming and the production of wood, a rare material that was vital to shipbuilding.
