Notes
This is the earliest Umayyad dirham recorded from the mint of Ifriqiya. Klat cites one dated in the year AH 97 and then others from 98 and one from 99. Another piece from AH 100 was recently discovered. From that date onwards the Ifriqiya dirham series becomes far more abundant. It is clear that the dies for this coin were prepared in the Damascus mint, because of the distinctive telegraphic style employed in its legends. At this time Ifriqiya possessed its own gold coinage whose legends were largely in Latin characters. This probably served as the local coinage for large transactions, while the issues of copper fulus would have circulated for daily use among the people. The introduction of a standard Umayyad silver coinage suggests that it formed part of the Caliph al-Walid's expansion of Umayyad dirham mints throughout his territories. As Ifriqiya had not, up to this time, had silver coinage of its own it is likely that rather than being intended for local circulation it served as part of the amount of tribute paid into the central Umayyad treasury. This tribute could be more easily calculated by the weight of standard dirhams than by a new local coinage whose appearance would have been unfamiliar to the treasury staff and would therefore require restriking into conventional Umayyad dirhams.
