Description

Ilkhans - Abu Sa’id, AH 716-774.
This is an example of Abu-Sa’id’s most original coinage type. The obverse places the kalima supported by the names of the four orthodox caliphs within an enclosure framed by the words of Surah II (al-Baqara), verse 137 in part : fasika fi hukum Allah wa huwa al-sami ‘ al-‘alim (God is your all sufficient defender. He hears all and knows all). Although this type was principally struck in silver at many different mints, gold of this type is seldom encountered from mints other than Baghdad and Tabriz.
